Top Water Froggin For Bass

Top Water Froggin, For Bass
Frogs produce really well in low light conditions when bass are feeding In open water.I like to fish my Frogs like a sammy or a zara spook with a slack lined jerk pause walk the dog swimming retrieve .
BUT !!! , Frogs work best when used in weedy cover for Bass.. the gurgling sound and natural profile of Frog baits when presented correctly with the right gear and conditions will load the boat with Big Bass. I first use a technique of Pulling my frogs over the lillypads and hitting the open pockets with a stop and go hoppping like retrieve. This is my most productive and favorite presentation for producing explosive top water strikes .
Burning your Frog over the top of thick slop and matted weed is a great way to produce strikes from bass hunkered down in the slop. when Bass are in an aggressive, and positive feeding mode they will find and eat your frog eagerly . I will also employ a retrieve where I will burn a frog over the top of a matt until it hits an open pocket then I will let the Frog sit in the pocket for up to a minute with a slight twitch , pause then repeat allowing the rubber legs to kick, and flutter in the pocket. This can and often does prove to be unbearable to bass and will force a strike out of natural instincts.

When you are faced with short strikes and swipes at your Frog these are usally signs of either neutral feeding fish or you are fishing to fast ,slow down and work the frog in a less aggressive manner.
You must !make sure to watch your Frog at all times while fishing it, always be ready for a strike. If you get a strike and the frog is no longer visable, reel down and point your rod towards the fish and then as hard as you can SET THE HOOK !!! . While a lot of anglers preach you must wait until you feel the fish ,or the count to 3 technique.
I feel these result in to many missed fish. One of the most important aspects of frog fishing is being able to interprtit the differance of a fish on or a missed blow up, this will only come with experiance so do not be discouraged by missing some strikes it is part of fishing with frogs
A good plan of attack when dealing with missed blow ups, and short strikes is to use a follow-up lure, such as a Texas-rigged worm, or my favorite.... a weedles Senko. After a blow up or short strike, immediately cast your follow up lure into the hole in the slop created by the blow up.
When Bass are in a nuetral or negative feeding mode and show little interest in your Frog on the surface , they will hit your worm or senko on the fall or on the bottom. This also shows the versitily of Frogs, not only are they an exceptional catching bait there are an excellant way to get hiding bass to show themselves.
Work your Frogs in and around wood, lay downs, boatdocks .Make sure you are constantly bouncing your frog off all the cover you can find dont be shy about his throw your frog right in the middle of the cover and bang it around making sure to contact the cover, this will drive the bass crazy and aggrevate them into a reaction strike.
Always try to make your frog act in way that the bass will think it is trying to flee a predator and the bass' natural instincts will take over and produce violent heart pounding strikes.
I will also cast the Frog up on the banks and let it hop or slide back into the water, this when down correctly in the right places will produce like no other pattern.

The Boze Sumo Frog is my choice with its solid body construction and lively legs.It also features a tail weighted system making the Frog float ever so slightly with its nose out of the water , and they cast a mile. The Sumo Frog is also armed at the business end with ultra sharp Owner Hooks that have bone crushing penetration that wont let go.
One more note about the Sumo Frog...over the years I have tried every make and model of Top Water Frog and I keep coming back to the Sumo Frog. Best on the market IMO.
